Flying insects

Midges

Characteristics:
Drosophila or fruitflies or vinegar flies (Drosophila melanogaster Meigen, 1830) are insects that belong to the Diptera order, model organism for genetic research. The life cycle of Drosophila melanogaster at 25°C is just 2 weeks. The duration is almost doubled at 18°C. The females can lay up to 600 eggs (embryos) in fruit or other organic matter. The eggs have a diameter of around 0.5 millimetres and hatch 24 hours after laying. The larvae grow for 5 days, during which they use micro organisms that decompose the fruit and fruit sugars to feed themselves. The larvae then encapsulate within a pupa where they spend a further 5 days consuming the food accumulated, to metamorphose into the adult insect that emerges.
