Funghi diseases
Cortical cancers
Characteristics:
Various types of fungi can cause this disease, penetrating into the cortex tissues by accidental lesions or due to pruning.
Symptoms:
The first signs are brown-reddish marks on the cortex, that then swell with the production of a tissue that is similar to cork. The cortex lacerates and the actual wood remains bare, open to further fungi attack. If branches have been injured, they dry out but the plant survives. If the trunk has been attacked, without appropriate care and attention, the plant is likely to die.
Defence:
Preventative action is needed, taking care to prune correctly and with disinfected tools. Wounds or cuts from pruning should always ideally be disinfected, and protected immediately afterwards with mastics. If the attack is already clear, pruning is required in the event of smaller branches involved, or the infected areas of the cortex should be cut and removed if larger branches or the trunk is diseased. A concentrated solution should be brushed over the wounds, and a healing mastic applied.
