Funghi diseases
Water moulds
Characteristics:
This disease is caused by a microscopic fungi that affects almost all citrus fruits (lemon, cedar, bitter orange, etc.) but which causes very serious damage to the lemon in particular. The first symptoms of the disease are easily recognised by observing the leaves of the branches at the top of the plant, which yellow, particularly at the nerves. As time passes, they fall and the branches dry out. If the fungi attack takes place from the foliage, the disease progresses slowly, whilst if the roots are attacked first, the plant dies very quickly. Another element to recognise the attack of Water mould can be seen by cutting a branch and observing the inside, which is salmon pink in colour, meaning that the fungus is present. Infections generally take place in October – January, where there is humidity and temperatures of around 15-20 degrees. In any case, to have the infection, the branches must have injuries through which the fungus penetrates the plant. As such, small injuries caused by strong wind or a hailstorm, or inconsiderate pruning of plants in this period, no doubt encourages the infection.
