Insects in the green

Gastropods

Characteristics:
By gastropods, we intend a land mollusc with a shell. Gastropods feed on leaves of most plants, causing serious damage, particularly in vegetable patches, where they are greatly feared and combated. They mainly come out at night or, encouraged by humidity, after consistent rain. As they are very voracious, in just one night they can eat many parts of the unfortunate plant. They mainly feed on the tender green parts of the plant, like the leaves, and rarely directly lead to the plant's death, however as the plant is therefore weakened, death can be a consequence. However, generally speaking plants look eaten, which only causes aesthetic damage. As they are crawling animals, they tend to prefer smooth to rough surfaces: to keep them away, it may help to spread largely broken eggshell around the plant, to encourage them to change their minds, thereby saving the vegetable's life. To weaken snails, they can be removed manually, collecting them from the shade, under stones where they seek refuge from the heat, or by using poison traps such as methiocarb, or methaldehyde-based products. Some chemical remedies, however, are also poisonous for domestic animals and children, and are therefore not recommended where these are present.
