Insects in the green

Mites

Characteristics:
The larvae of this coleopteran are orange in colour with black markings and adults are yellow with black stripes. In the spring, the adults come out of hibernation and the earth and attack the potato plant, as well as the aubergine, pepper and tomato, to feed on the leaves. After mating, the female lays eggs and the larvae hatch after 1-2 weeks. They feed voraciously before heading to the earth where they will become adults. In the months of July – August, the second generation of larvae develops, whose adults will spend the winter in the ground.

Symptoms:
Leaves with more or less marked erosions up to total loss of leaves. The damage caused ranges from the plant's death to the formation of small, limited tubers in the event of the potato.

Defence:
Timely intervention is needed, as soon as the first erosions are noted.
