If you notice that the fruits of your trees are damaged and tend to fall, it may depend because of an infestation by Ceratitis capitata, the fruit fly, a phytophagous insect whose grub grows inside the pulp of many fruits; in fact, an effective way to verify if insects are present is to check if the fruit proves to be very soft to the touch and if wormholes are observable.
The origins of the fruit fly are uncertain, it is believed to come from Mediterranean Africa but nowadays it is widespread worldwide, such as to be considered the main danger for fruit farming because of its polyphagia, as well as because of the extent of damages and the difficulty in controlling it. In Italy, the most affected fruit trees are: the peach tree, the apricot tree, the fig tree and the persimmon tree. In case of particularly intense infestations, Ceratitis capitata may attack even other kind of trees.
