Insects in the green

Thrips

Characteristics:
Tiny insects just 2 mm long, yellow or black in colour and with a lengthened shape and narrow wings. They hibernate as adults in the ground, taking to fruit orchards, vegetable gardens and flower beds/ornamental plants in the springtime, where several generations appear, with maximum presence in the summer months. Damage is due to the injections they perform to remove the lymph and to the holes caused by the laying of the eggs.

Symptoms:
Leaves with clear silver colour marks laid in strips and brown-blackish colour dots. Buds and flowers show deformations and loss of colour. Causes blackish lesions on fruits and gives rise to significant falling of fruits. With the growth of the fruits, damage becomes clear due to the appearance of zones of fabric similar to cork and deep wounds from which thick gum comes out.

Defence:
We need to intervene at the first infestations, repeating two treatments ten days apart.
