Insects in the green
White flies
Characteristics:
The winged adults do not generally exceed 2 mm in length and are excellent fliers, often found on the lower part of the leaf. They use their mouths to suck the lymph of colonised plants. Their reproductive capacity is high and many crops can be infested by these insects.
Symptoms:
Colonies visible on the lower side of the leaves that show widespread yellowing and are covered with waxy whitish substances. Phylloptosis can occur, namely the early falling of leaves. Typically, when the plant is moved, they fly off, forming white ‘clouds'.
Defence:
Timely intervention is needed, as soon as symptoms of the attack are noted, and repeating two or three treatments in a short space of time.
