Characteristics:
Darnel, or cockle (Lolium temulentum) is an annual herbaceous plant belonging to the Poaceae family. It is spontaneous and infests amidst crops, with red ear flowers. In the Mediterranean area, in its spontaneous state, although localising above all in open environments, they occupy virtually all types of habitats, from woods to humid locations, sandy dunes and ruinous environments. They push through at all latitudes, with significant altimetric excursion. These plants are perfectly suited to dry climates, although mesophile species and even aquatic varieties also exist. The importance in terms of vegetable covering of the earth is significant: they comprise thick vegetative formations that extend widely, giving a specific physiognomy as meadows, savannas, steppes.
