Pests and weeds

Digitaria

Characteristics:
This is an annual cycle poaceae that grows 20-50 cm high, forming wide clusters with lots of ramifications at the base. The roots can extend down to 2 m below ground, and expand, in the adult plant, for a diameter of 4 metres. Each plant can produce up to 150,000 seeds that, once in the ground, in order to germinate require fairly high temperatures and plenty of humidity. The preferential route for dissemination is the wind, however also watering or streams, as well as animals and man can contribute to introducing this species into cultivated fields. It is a weed that infests many spring-summer crops, and which is particularly competitive, above all because it removes nitrogen. As this is a highly photo-synthetically efficient species and can also develop well, even if shaded by cultivated plants. This allows it to develop even when the crop has reached a high level of coverage of the ground. It is a species that prefers cultivated fields, particularly lime or sandy soils that hold humidity well. It benefits from high quantities of nitrogen.
