Characteristics:
Poaceae constitute a family of allergenic plants that is widespread over the earth's surface. They produce pollen that take absolute first place worldwide as pollen agents. The term rather dubiously coined as ‘hay fever' has been adopted specifically in reference to the allergy to the pollens that these herbs that comprise hay. Poaceae very often alone represent the main component of many herbaceous environments such as pastures, lawns, savannahs and steppe. They are present at all latitudes, adapting to extremely variable weather conditions. In urban environments, Poaceae not only forms lawns, but also vegetates in uncultivated lands, along the edges of roads. The family of the Poaceae includes around 9000 species grouped into 650 genres, of which around 120 are present in Italy, with almost 450 species. The most allergenic are Dactylis, Festuca, Poa, Lolium, Holcus, Phleum, etc.. Various types of cereals, such as wheat, barley, rye, oats, are also included in this family.
