Funghi diseases

Sooty moulds

Characteristics:
This disease is caused by various fungi that develop following the production of nectar, as in the case of aphids, psylla and cochineals, or of other substances, as for plant hoppers. In practice, these materials comprise the nourishment for the fungi, which, as they develop, cover leaves and other parts of the plant with a grey-black mould. The attack begins at the end of the spring and reaches a peak in summer/autumn.

Symptoms:
Leaves completely or partly covered by a grey-black dust that is initially greasy. As it dries, it becomes similar to a crust. Damage is aesthetic, but also functional: the covered leaves reduce their photosynthesis capacity, with a consequent reduction in plant development. Early falling is often seen.

Defence:
As a first step, the insects that have caused the development of the attack by the pathogen fungi must be removed with specific insecticides. To treat the fungi, several interventions with copper-based products must be applied.
