Crawling insects
Ants
Characteristics:
Ants are one of nature's greatest examples of organisation, collaboration and group life.
There are around 6000 different species of this insect, grouped into the order of hymenoptera, family of formicidae, and the most common in Italy are the red ant, the Argentine ant, the honey ant (living in Arizona and central-south America) and the giant ant.
Their body comprises a head, thorax and abdomen. They have six legs and antennae, and a chewing mouth apparatus. Some species have an spine or poison gland for defence. The queen will produce eggs whilst the workers that can live more than 15 years look after them. Ants are generally omnivores and attracted into houses by sugary substances or other foodstuffs. They are generally considered as tranquil insects, although there are aggressive examples. A leafcutter ants nest consumes a mass of leaves every day equal to that consumed by an adult cow, and their nests can reach depths of 8 metres, making them into real traps for animals.
