Insects in the green

Aphids

Characteristics:
These are very small insects (1-3 mm) of various different colours (yellow, green, grey, black). They suck and the damage is due to the large quantities of lymph that they remove, causing general impoverishment. Their bites can transmit virosis. They hibernate in the form of eggs that hatch in the spring: aphids quickly invade the tips growing on the attacked plants. At the end of spring, the winged forms appear that migrate to other plants, generating new colonies. At the end of summer, new winged individuals move to trees and shrubs to lay the hibernating eggs. The many species of aphid attack almost all the plants in our garden.

Symptoms:
Colonies can be seen on the lower part of the leaves, shoots and buds with deformation, shrivelled leaves and a loss of colour. The attacked parts are covered very quickly in grey-black mould (sooty moulds) due to the nectar produced by the aphids. The nectar, a sticky sugary liquid, also attracts a great many ants.

Defence:
Given the high number of generations that can develop, the defence interventions must be repeated several times in spring/summer, taking care particularly to treat the tips of plants and the lower part of the leaves.
