Insects in the green
Cabbage whites / Cutworms
Characteristics:
Cabbage whites attack cabbage in particular, whilst cutworms can attack ornamental flowers and vegetables. They hibernate in the ground. The adults (butterflies with brown/ochre colour wings) for the cutworms and white with black tips for the cabbage whites) lay their eggs on the aerial parts of the plants in late spring. The larvae (caterpillars) that develop feed on the leaves and stems. The larvae are nocturnal, measuring around 35/40 mm long and are yellow/green in colour with black spots and tufts of bristles.
Symptoms:
Leaves eroded to varying extents, through to total skeletisation (where only the nerves remain). Broken stems following tunnels dug internally. Serious attacks lead to the death of the plants.
Defence:
There are various ways in which these parasites can be fought: Treatments with geo-pest killers against the forms that hibernate in the ground; organic fight with Badillus Thuringensis against the young larvae; chemical fight against the larvae that have already developed.
