Insects in the green
Cochineals
Characteristics:
The characteristic of the cochineals is the secretion of various substances with which they cover their body (shields). The colour of this can vary from white/greyish to brown. The form can be rounded or oblong. Consistency goes from a cotton bud to that of a hardened drop of wax. As well as removing the lymph, which causes a generalised impoverishment, the damage is due to the injection, of toxic substances.
Symptoms:
Visible shields in the irregularity of the cortex, the leaf joint and small shields on the lower side of the leaf and sometimes on the fruits. Deformation and loss of colour of leaves often covered by a grey/black mould (sooty moulds) due to the production of nectar by the cochineals, in the same way as described for aphids. Serious attacks can lead to the plant's death.
Defence:
The fight against this parasite involves winter treatments with white oil and subsequently with specific insecticides and lower doses of white oil.
