Horsefly

Characteristic:

Horsefly, also known as oestrus, is a dipterous insect of family Tabanidae. It is similar to a big fly, but stubbier (up to 2,5 com), grey/yellowish-colored and with big eyes. Females are hematophagous, getting nourishment from blood of animals, while males are phytophagous (they feed on sap and vegetable juices of flowers). Their sting is painful causing swelling and itch because apparatus is quite big and damages nerves as well. It can suck up to 0,2ml of blood and can bite even through clothes.

A particularity of this insect is that it does not utter any buzzing and flies only during daylight hours. Horsefly mainly lives in shady areas: in grasslands, meadow, woods and stables, where it can find the animals from whose blood it can feed on, from May until August. It is particularly active during muggy days with high humidity level.
