Mites

Characteristics:
Mites are microscopic arachnids that are always present on the fur of animals (like on blankets, mattresses and anywhere dust can lay). in specific conditions, they can give rise to problems of varying severity.

For example, in the ear, they can give parasite forms of otitis that can be cured with specific products (therefore not with normal ear drops, but rather with specifically formulated drops). Mite otitis gives an unpleasant odour that is very pungent and easy to recognise. In any case, you veterinary will advise you about this.

Another disease brought by mites is demodectic mange, often simply referred to as mange.

Differently to that thought when we speak of mange, demodectic mange absolutely cannot be transmitted to man or other animals, because it is of a genetic and/or immune origin.

When a dog has a compromised immune system due to emotional, psychological or physical stress, or if it is genetically predisposed, it can be subject to attacks by mites (that all dogs have on their bodies). It therefore begins losing its fur, often near the dampest parts of the body (eyes, nose, lips and between the toes). Some veterinaries believe that if not treated in time, the situation can degenerate to an unfavourable conclusion, whilst others hold that the opposite is true, namely that if not treated, it tends to clear up spontaneously.

Mange is fairly common amongst molossoid breeds and rarely affects an adult dog: puppies are more frequently affected.

A form of prevention can be found in acaricide sprays easily available from a pharmacy, and to be sprayed in the areas where the dog runs. This may also be useful in the event of mite allergy in humans.
