Moths
Characteristics:
Moths are an invisible and irritating enemy that settles inside clothes, closets and in the furniture. The best prevention is a meticulous cleaning of drawers and of clothes. To stop an infestation of moths the following systems are suggested:
Glues traps activated with specific pheromones: to observe the situation of infestation and avoid mating.
Vacuum cleaner: moths nest in carpets and baseboards, therefore an important step for a complete disinfestation may be achieved through the use of a vacuum cleaner.
Dry cleaning for the infested textiles. This step removes all existing moths from clothes and also humidity.
Sunlight: limited effect.
Heating: very high temperatures (50°C for more than 30 minutes). These conditions can be achieved maintaining the infested materials in a roof or washing textiles at a higher temperature (for wool take into account the risk of felting)
Freeze: freeze the infested material for several days at a temperature inferior to 0°C
Smoking with dry ice: smoking a material with dry ice plunging it into carbon dioxide in high concentration will remove all stages of moths
Permethrin: typically in spray formulation (low toxicity for mammals, but very dangerous for cats)
Pyrethroid: for example Deltamethrin
Growth regulators for insects: stop the vital cycle.
anti-moth products in small balls. Two products are available: the eldest are made up with naphthalene, the more recent with dichlorobenzene. Both sublimate into gases heavier than air and are supposed to reach an high concentration in order to be effective. A safer and more natural alternative is campho
Citron: its utility as a deterrent is uncertain. The volatile oil of Citron of Virginia (Juniperus virginiana) can kill grubs, but it is difficult to maintain a sufficient concentration to achieve any effect. Furthermore, citron looses its quality after a few years.
As regards chemical products, it is recommended to use them by means of a spray diffuser, making sure of using a sufficient quantity. Treat once per month during the first three months and the each four months to maintain infestation under control.
